GetShotByElla.com @ Carlile House Haberdashery

Serendipity, that mysterious good fortune that leads to fun and totally unexpected discoveries that are not part of a conscious searching, was in place for the GetShotByElla.com team on a recent sunny April Florida afternoon. Taking a wrong turn, our photographers landed on the grounds of Carlile House Feminine Arts Haberdashery, 1437 US Highway 1, Sebastian, FL.

A gorgeous old growth oak tree shaded the historic property, and planted carefully where the tree’s limbs lifted from the trunk were several varieties of orchids of different colors. A wary young Calico Persian looking cat was routed by our approach and bee-lined under the building.

As luck would have it, there was an “OPEN” sign in prominent view…and it happened to be the last day the establishment would be open for the season, with reopening scheduled for October.

Inside, the beautifully renovated historic building houses a textile art studio offering classes in sewing, alterations and more, a haberdashery providing quality hard-to-find materials used in textile art, and an arts gallery showcasing one-of-a-kind handmade textile and locally made art objects.

Thursday, April 28th
Leaving the house early while the dew was still on the lawn and the neighborhood was quiet, I saw him. He was stray and yellow. His ribs showed through his fur. His face looked like it had been through many unsuccessful fights. He was tired as he sat across the street watching me closely, knowing if I made a move toward him he would have to run.

The stray cat was unaware of how close he was to redemption. Inside my home, my daughter was asleep. The stray didn’t know her deep love for animals and that she would go to any length to improve the life of one so lost. My daughter would feed this little one gladly. She would go slowly, so the fears could subside. She wouldn’t rush relationship, but would allow the stray to come into a place of trust at his own pace. If asked, my daughter would open the doors of our home to this one. She would create a place of belonging and nurturing. She would set up areas of retreat to where the stray could return to find solitude and the ability to regroup and become comfortable. My daughter would shower this lost one with love even if the stray never came to full reliance and confidence.

As I drove on considering all of this, I realized that many of us are strays in spirit. Afraid and unsure, we live on the cusp unaware that if only we sanctioned the assistance of the Creator our lives could change radically for the better. We could move slowly, permitting only that interaction with which we were at ease. We could find a place of belonging and nurturing, where solitude and comfort abounds. We could be showered with love even if we never came to full acceptance or trust.

May we open our minds to the possibilities. May we turn in our stray stance to become the beloved of One able to bless.

Growing Healthy Kids Nutrition Scientist Program features art with Ella Chabot

The Florida Veggies and More hydroponic farm was filled with enthusiastic young learners on Saturday morning 3/5/2016. Wearing bright lime green tees, the youth were participants in the Nutrition Scientist program conducted by the non-profit Growing Healthy Kids, Inc. founded by Nancy Heinrich.

Growing Healthy Kids, Inc., in collaboration with Florida Veggies and More and Rotary Club of Vero Beach-Sunrise, created the Nutrition Scientist Program to teach children about growing, preparing and eating locally grown foods, making them ambassadors in their homes and communities for encouraging better nutrition. Rotary Club of Vero Beach-Sunrise volunteers accompany and assist the children during all phases of the program.IMG_3033

The morning session began with Nancy Heinrich in the Florida Veggies kitchen demonstrating, with much assistance from the children, preparation of a healthy breakfast, made with fresh local ingredients, including fresh apples, strawberries and blue berries. Breakfast consisted of two flavors of home made pancakes topped with garden picked fruits, yogurt and real maple syrup and a flavorful omelet made with farm fresh eggs. Heinrich’s ongoing message to the children is the importance of recipes that avoid processed ingredients such as high fructose corn syrup and refined grains.

Following food preparation, the children enjoyed eating their healthy breakfast outdoors in the Florida Veggies gardens. The food was enjoyed by all with mostly clean plates!IMG_3046 (2)

Next on the day’s agenda was a special garden art program for the children facilitated by  https://getshotbyella.com/ artist Ella Chabot. The children created drawings of fresh fruits and vegetables and garden plants. Heinrich will make several laminated prints of each drawing to create place mats that will be presented to each child’s family.
