Doowap vocal group Joey and the Paradons joined Johnny Martino, original cast member of the iconic American crime movie The Godfather, who starred as Paulie Gatto, for The Godfather Doowop Celebration, and the house was packed at the Italian American Civic Association, 1600 25th Street, Vero Beach, FL, on Friday April 12, 2019.
The show commenced at 7 pm with an enthusiastically received performance by Martino, who sang and shared stories about getting started as an actor, as well as some of his memorable encounters with Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, and others.
Originally from Brooklyn, NY, Martino released a hit song Baby Sitting Baby and appeared on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand in his teens. He is renowned for his role as driver Paulie Gatto in the award winning film The Godfather, based on Mario Puzo’s novel and directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Martino recently celebrated the 45th anniversary of The Godfather by releasing his new album Speak Softly Love. His films include Flowers, Truck Stop Women, Dillinger, Confessions of a Thug, A City of Shoulders and Noses and other movies.
Martino’s act was followed by a surprise performance by the gifted young actor/singer Michael Jon, who can truly “sing like Frank Sinatra.”
Jon then turned the stage over to Joey and The Paradons, and all in attendance were transported via the group’s unique sound and harmony back to the beginning of real Street Corner harmony, from Brooklyn and the Bronx, where DooWop had its start. Regardless of age, the magic of the Paradons music made everyone feel young for the night, and the dance floor was hoppin’ til the final note of the last song.
